Kamiar and Arash Alaei are Iranian HIV/AIDS doctors who were jailed in 2008, accused of collaborating with an enemy government. Before their imprisonment, the Alaeis pioneered the integrated treatment of HIV infection with counselling and drug rehabilitation, and their approach to care in prisons has been hailed by the World Health Organization as a model for the rest of the Middle East to follow. The brothers have been awarded this year’s Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights.

However, what is rational depends on the dominant cultural ideology. If deviations from the expected norm of behavioral or physical function are related to whims of the gods or to transgressions against them, rational treatment is placation of the proper deity or deities. If the deviations are due to an imbalance of bodily fluids or humors, attempts to rebalance by bleeding or purging make sense.
What is rational in the age of molecular biology? Should not diseases be seen in essentialist terms as disturbances at a molecular level and labeled accordingly? Should not the offending underlying process be elucidated and repaired by genetic manipulation or by altering the structure, function, or interaction of the proteins encoded by those genes? The World Health Organisation (WHO) called on Wednesday for an immediate halt to the use of blood tests to detect active tuberculosis, saying they were faulty and leave millions of people at risk. Production of the test kits, WHO officials said, was largely by Western companies which export them to developing countries because they have not passed regulatory standards in rich nations. “Overwhelming evidence showed that the blood tests produced an unacceptable level of wrong results” which led to misdiagnosis and mistreatment, the United Nations agency said after a year-long analysis.

Mother Teresa once said, Whatever our religion, we know that if we really want to love, we must first learn to forgive before anything else.
My best friend, Beatriz, taught me that same lesson 15 years ago when I read aloud to her on the phone the letter I wanted to send my dad: a list of all the important events in my life that he hadnt showed up for and why that was wrong. Granted, I had good reason to be hurt, and it may have been appropriate to send the letter.
But it wouldnt have helped me love him any better.
I dont think that letter is going to do anything but make him feel guiltier than he already feels, and then keep you that much more out of his life, my very wise friend told me.
