The Health Benefits of Hemicellulase

The hemicellulase enzyme breaks down hemicellulose, which is a type of cellulase and a key component of the cell wall in all plants. Different forms of plant hemicellulose include glucans, galactans, xylans, mannans and pentosans. Common fiber-rich breakfast cereals, for example, have a large amount of hemicelluloses (2 to 12%). Hemicellulase is needed to break down these fiber-rich components, and because it is not produced naturally in the human body, we rely on microorganisms that live in the human digestive tract to produce it for us.

The hemicellulase enzyme has the ability to take non-cellulose polysaccharides (long chains of sugars) we eat and convert them into usable constituents.

A great writer, I’ve come to believe, is a great writer.

Journalists–and writers of all kinds of books–get pigeonholed. It’s all part of the general conspiracy amongst otherwise intelligent folks to smack labels on things so that their true scale and scope aren’t so overwhelming. I knew a guy who got pigeonholed as a writer once every few years when he consciously switched gears to write about something different. Then he’d write about that new thing for awhile, get sick of it, switch gears, and write about something else.

Lou Schuler is a great writer, and I’ve come to believe that it doesn’t really matter what he’s writing about.

Two bits of supporting evidence this week: The New Rules of Lifting for Life, his new book on exercise for folks of middle age and above, co-authored with Alwyn Cosgrove, and Saints Alive, is young-adult novel, now available for the Kindle for FREE on Amazon.

Depression in men is noticed more frequently after entering andropause (male menopause). In the majority of the cases, depression appears as a result of sexual problems such as:

Decreased libido
Erectile dysfunction
Impotence

It is estimated that around 40 percent of men aged 40 and up are affected by such problems, so depression in men is rather common.

Depression affects men and women in very different ways. Depressed women tend to direct their feelings inward, while depressed men will exercise their depression in other ways.

Is Your Bra Strangling Your Breasts and Your Health?

A new study has found that up to 85 percent of the women in the United Kingdom are wearing ill-fitting bras, some of which are strangling women’s breasts and may be adversely affecting their health.

Breast health in relationship to wearing a bra typically focuses on the question of whether bras can cause breast cancer. While some studies have claimed or eluded to possible evidence that bras can cause breast cancer, the National Cancer Society states that this is a myth and that there is no scientific evidence that wearing a bra can cause cancer.

The origin of this myth can be attributed to a provocative 1995 book titled “Dressed to Kill” that claims that women who wear underwire bras up to 12 hours per day have a significantly higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who do not wear a bra. Follo

Study finds protective gene in fat cells

In a finding that may challenge popular notions of body fat and health, researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) have shown how fat cells can protect the body against diabetes. The results may lead to a new therapeutic strategy for preventing and treating type 2 diabetes and obesity-related metabolic diseases, the authors say.

In the last decade, several research groups have shown that fat cells in people play a major role in controlling healthy blood sugar and insulin levels throughout the body. To do this crucial job, fat cells need a small portion of the sugars derived from food. Obesity often reduces the dedicated sugar transport molecules on fat cells, blocking the glucose from entering fat cells.
